Here are our suggested steps for putting together that business finance plan.

Step 1 Know what you need and why

Most planning starts with having the end in mind. You have a vision for where you are going - such as opening branches in new locations, increasing turnover by a specific amount or becoming a recognised brand in a new market.

In your business plan you'll set out the steps you need to reach that destination. You'll identify your current strengths and weaknesses, also the opportunities and the threats.

The business plan will detail the actions you need to take, along with their anticipated costs. These are likely to include:

  • Purchase of stock or equipment
  • Marketing costs
  • Employment costs

Your planning will also factor in the impact of new revenue streams, when your investment in growth begins to generate new sales. This should lead into a cashflow plan, where you document projected income and costs over time. The cashflow plan will help you to see how much funding you need and over what period of time.

Step 2 Understand your current numbers

Having planned for the future, you also need to have a strong grasp of where your business is today. Without a realistic understanding of current income and costs and the cashflow associated with these, it's hard to plan for the future.

However, you also need to be aware of other numbers in your business, such as the value and type of assets that you have and the existing levels of debt and their associated repayments.

Most businesses carry some form of debt, such as an overdraft, a loan or credit cards. Alternatively, there could be an obligation to repay an external investor, such as a business angel. While the expectation of repayment may still be some way in the future, it should be factored into your numbers and planning.

Step 3 Research your options

Step 4 Create your finance plan

As you pull together all the information you can start to make a finance plan based on your preferred funding options.

At the heart of your plan will be a cashflow forecast, which sets out the incoming and outgoing cash movements over time. This can be built in a spreadsheet or in a dedicated finance modeling app. Building the plan in a spreadsheet or app should allow you to adjust it based on different scenarios, helping you to assess the impact of various changes.

You may want to create alternative plans, based on different approaches to raising the finance - such as taking out a loan over several years versus receiving investment from a business angel.

Step 5 Review your plan in detail

Share your financial plan with others to get their feedback. Encourage them to question your assumptions and to suggest alternative options. The larger the project, the more important it is that you have a finance review by a professional, such as your accountant. An objective opinion from someone outside your business can be hugely valuable, particularly when they have experience of finance planning for similar projects.

Step 6 Source funding providers

Having thoroughly researched, built and tested your finance plan, it's time to approach potential funders. This could be a bank, a venture capitalist or a business angel, or some other provider of business funds. Your planning will have helped you identify at least one, and possibly several, funding options.

Depending on the scale and basis of the funding you're looking for, potential providers will have different questions and require specific information from you. This can include:

Debt finance

Raising money for your business can involve borrowing money from your family, a bank or other financial institution. Borrowing, or debt finance, can take the form of a loan, a credit card, invoice finance or some alternative mechanism, such as peer-to-peer borrowing. You're committing to make repayments over a period of time, usually paying interest on the amount borrowed.

Debt finance is either secured or unsecured. A secured debt is where the amount borrowed is linked with an asset, such as a building, and the lender has rights over that asset should you default on making the agreed repayments. You're giving the lender some security that they'll get their money back should your business become unable to repay.
An unsecured debt is not linked to an asset, making it harder for the lender to recover their money. As a result, the interest payments on an unsecured arrangement are often higher and the amount you can borrow is lower. Many financial institutions ask that a director signs a personal guarantee, making them personally responsible for ensuring that the debt is settled.

One risk of debt finance is that the business can become trapped in a debt cycle. You're continually borrowing and paying interest, which eats away at profits. Debt finance can be hugely useful, but its use should be planned and managed.

Equity finance

Equity finance means exchanging part of your business in return for a cash investment. This can be a popular approach for a startup company, particularly where high growth is anticipated, but it needs substantial investment to get going. Venture capitalists and angel investors are always looking out for investment opportunities like this - a business they can buy into that will give them a high return, years in the future.

Because equity capital means giving up ownership of part of your business, it can also mean handing over an element of control. The extent of this should be agreed in advance, in order to set clear expectations. Some investors are comfortable with leaving the founder to manage the business while others want some input into strategic decisions. This can be useful where the investment comes from someone with solid commercial knowledge and experience that they are able to share. Some angel investors want to provide mentorship as part of their investment.

Business angels and others willing to make an investment in equity will want some assurance as to how they will get their money back, and more besides. This could be in the form of dividends or as proceeds from the sale of the business.

The benefits of equity investments include access to larger sums of capital, and potentially, access to the expertise of their investor and their network of contacts. The downside can be loss of total control.

Asset finance

Your choice of funding is broader when your business has assets, such as property, equipment or non-tangible items such as intellectual property. An asset has intrinsic value and this value can be released by taking out finance that's secured on the asset. An example of this is a sale and leaseback arrangement, where the business effectively sells the asset, say a major piece of equipment, and then leases it back from the new owner. This ensures that you can still use the asset, but you also get a lump sum payment from the sale.

A related approach to raising money is invoice finance, also known as invoice factoring. This is often used to improve cash flow in a business that raises invoices on credit terms. The company gets paid almost as soon as it's raised an invoice, even though the customer may take 30 days or even longer to settle the bill. As with most such asset finance arrangements, the interest rate on the money borrowed will affect its cost and the impact on the bottom line.

Business finance can also be raised against the value of an asset in the possession of the business owner, typically a private property.

What is Financial Inclusion?

Financial inclusion is defined by The World Bank as a concept that ensures that people and businesses ‘have access to useful and affordable financial products and services’.

When it comes to Islamic finance, one of the key principles that facilitates financial inclusion is ensuring that there is access to savings and credit that is compliant with Sharia law. Research has found that in Muslim-majority countries up to 13% of people do not use conventional banks due to religious reasons [3]. The figures relating to financial inclusion in non-Muslim countries are likely to be much higher.

The United Nations and G-20 have both stated that financial inclusion is high on the agenda if globally we are to achieve sustainable development goals. Financial inclusion, therefore, goes beyond finances and relates to social and economic inclusion.

It can be very convenient, and flexible, but at the same time you need to be aware of how financial arrangements can affect your relationships with people close to you. If all goes well, there's unlikely to be a problem. But if the business struggles, they may become concerned or even demand some of the investment back.When borrowing from friends and family, it's a good idea to draw up a document that will help to set everyone's expectations, both for how much involvement they will have in running the business, and how and when they will be repaid. Grants

A grant is money that does not usually need to be repaid. There are various local and national grant schemes available to businesses, usually linked to startups, growth or innovation. They can range in size from just a few hundred pounds to many thousands, even millions.While grants can be hugely beneficial to entrepreneurs, they can also be time-consuming to apply for and sometimes come with quite stringent conditions. Many grants are based on match funding, meaning they won't cover the full cost of a specific project - you are expected to raise some of the funds from elsewhere.

Secured loan

A secured loan is where you borrow from a bank or other institution and if you fail to make repayments the lender has rights over an asset that you own, such as your home or business property. Because the loan is secured on an asset the lender has confidence they will get some or all of their money back, should you run into financial problems.It can take a few weeks to set up a secured loan because legal documents must be drawn up and signed off. The advantage of such a loan is that because it's secured, you may get more favourable terms, such as lower interest charges or a longer repayment term. The downside is that if you fail to keep up with repayments, your property is at risk. Most lenders aren't in a hurry to sell your asset, as they'd rather you found ways to keep up your repayments. However, they have that option if they need it.Applying for a loan will usually require you to provide considerable information about the financial position of your business, along with projections about future income and cash flow.

Unsecured loans

An unsecured loan is where you borrow without providing an asset as security. However, most banks and other financial institutions do ask for a director's guarantee or equivalent. This is where the director agrees to take personal responsibility for repaying the loan, should the business be unable to do so.Because it's not linked to an asset, an unsecured loan can be set up more quickly. However, for the same reason the amount you can borrow is likely to be lower, and the terms less favourable.These loans can come in various forms, including business credit cards, which are effectively an indefinite loan where you choose how much you want to borrow and repay on a monthly basis, subject to certain limits.

Venture capital and angel investors

Venture capitalists and angel investors are individuals or groups seeking to put money into businesses with growth potential. Venture capitalists are investing funds on behalf of a third-party and as such, they are more risk averse. They're looking for evidence that the business has a promising future. An angel investor, or business angel, is a high-net-worth individual who is often more open to getting involved with a startup and will take a bigger risk.The money they give you is not a loan. They are effectively buying part of the business - they have a stake in the equity of your business, meaning they become co-owners. This can have some implications for the amount of control that you have over how you run the business, but can be beneficial, giving you a source of advice and support, and it can provide a strong incentive for you to be more successful.Both VCs and angel investors will make a careful assessment of your business and its potential, and they know that by investing they are taking a risk. At some point they will want to be repaid - often when the business is sold.

Crowdfunding and peer-to-peer finance

The internet has made it much easier to connect people who want to invest, often small amounts, with businesses looking to raise working capital - the cash they need to operate and grow.Crowdfunding is where a business wants to raise money to launch a specific product. The business can be either a startup or an established firm. It launches a crowdfunding appeal to people likely to be interested in the product. The funders typically don't have a right to be repaid if the business or product fails, but if it all goes well, they get access to the product on preferential terms. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only resulted in a public health crisis, but has also increased poverty levels and accelerated inequalities across the world. According to a recent survey of 37 countries[1], since the start of the pandemic:

  • 3 in 4 households suffered a reduction in income with 82% of poorer households affected.
  • Gender inequalities are on the rise due to consumer-facing industries being hit the hardest.
  • Minorities in high income countries have been hit hardest as they live in areas that have been most vulnerable to the health and economic impacts of the pandemic.

On the other end, the wealth gap is also widening as billionaires saw their wealth rise 27.5% to £7.9trn between April to July this year with their total numbers increasing to a record 2,189 (2,158 in 2017)[2]. As nations across the world attempt to cope with the crisis, they might be able to draw upon mechanisms that were used historically in the Muslim world in order to reduce poverty and income inequalities. Some of these mechanisms highlighted below, when used correctly, might serve to soften the blow by allowing for the systematic redistribution of wealth in society. These include amongst others access to a unique financing type as well as well as other mechanisms for income redistribution:

  • Qard Hasan (benevolent loan) is a loan that is extended from a lender to a borrower for social welfare purposes. Through this mechanism the rich are encouraged to extend loans to the needy. The lender has no right to demand any amount in excess of the original principal amount as that would violate the prohibition on Riba (interest or usury). When used on a broad scale, this type of financing serves as a tool to not only reduce income inequality and alleviate poverty but also promote financial inclusion.
  • Zakat and al-Khums (compulsory charity) and Sadaqa (voluntary charity) are mechanisms for income redistribution from the rich to the poor. Zakat, for example, a mandatory almsgiving that requires Muslims who own wealth at or above a certain threshold to donate a portion of it, typically 2.5%, to those who are eligible.[3]
  • Historically, Awqaf (endowments) or the waqf (singular) played a pivotal role in socio-economic development across the Muslim world. They were important Islamic financial institutions that mobilized and facilitated the flow of funds towards philanthropic causes such as in order to fund education, health & libraries amongst others.


To varying degrees, some of these mechanisms are currently being used in various parts of the world, whereas others (ex. Waqf) are no longer as prevalent as they once were. Having said that, more has to be done as nearly all economic indicators suggest we have reached a tipping point with high levels of poverty and income inequality across the world. Efforts by policy makers to address these issues by preempting them could involve integrating such mechanisms as well as others in order to allow for a more equitable distribution of wealth and income. This in turn would create the foundations for resilient systems that are better able to cope with shocks as they appear.

The UK is now home to a growing 27 Islamic fintechs, ahead of Malaysia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).As of July 2020, IFN FinTech – a global network representing fintech’s Islamic segment – says it’s recorded 142 Islamic fintechs around the world.

Malaysia has 19 fintech start-ups, followed by the UAE with 15, Indonesia with 13, and Saudi Arabia and the US with nine.

The UK’s fintech start-up scene has seen some significant traction from Islamic-friendly – as well as focused – firms.My Ahmed, a sharia-compliant e-money platform, was accepted onto the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) regulatory sandbox in July.

In the same month, Islamic peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform Qardus launched its services in the UK. So did sharia-complaint gold trading platform Minted, which plans to launch a digital bank in 2021. As did Kestrl, a sharia-compliant ethical banking alternative.
Since January, Islamic banking app Niyah and sharia-complaint digital bank Rizq have also launched in the UK.

LONDON _ A new UK-based Shariah-compliant crowdfunding platform which provides business financing to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) launched at the end of June.

Qardus Limited, which connects SMEs to investors, is an appointed representative of Share In Ltd, which is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Shariah-compliant crowdfunding is not a new concept in the UK, that already has platforms such as property-focused Yielders, but there are none already providing SME business financing.

“In terms of competition we would be the first to offer an Islamic business financing facility in the UK as the Islamic banks look at much larger ticket sizes,” Hassan Daher, Qardus founder and CEO told Salaam Gateway.

“In the UAE there is Beehive. Other fintechs in the UK such as Funding Circle and Iwoca only offer conventional financing facilities, not Islamic,” he added. In other regions, Kapital Boost, which was founded in 2015, was Asia’s first Islamic P2P crowdfunding platform for SMEs.

An Islamic crowdfunding platform has launched in the UK, providing Shariah-compliant finance to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Salaam Gateway reported that Qardus, which is an appointed representative of Financial Conduct Authority-regulated ShareIn, provides unsecured loans of up to £100,000 in the form of a commodity murabahah, an Islamic financing structure in which the seller and buyer agree to the cost and mark-up of an asset.

The platform, which is open to both Muslim and non-Muslim investors in the UK and Europe, has a minimum investment of £100 and offers target returns of 10 per cent per annum.
